Palm tree pruning in Mallorca requires specialist equipment, knowledge of the species and — something not everyone respects — not using climbing spikes. At Garden Solution we have been pruning palm trees on villas and estates across the whole island for over 10 years, using the correct technique and holding an official phytosanitary licence.
Each palm is assessed before any work begins. The job includes removing dead fronds and those that have started to droop, taking away flowers and fruit where appropriate, and cleaning the crown to keep clear access in case phytosanitary treatment is needed.
Removal of dead and drooping fronds
Removal of flowers, fruit and debris built up in the crown
Cleaning of the trunk when leaf remains are still attached
Removal of all the waste produced
Visual assessment of phytosanitary condition at every pruning
We never use climbing spikes. Spikes used for climbing create wounds in the trunk that are direct entry points for the red palm weevil and other diseases — a practice that harms the palm in the long term even if it seems harmless in the short term. We use specialist arboriculture climbing equipment that does not damage the tree.
Annual pruning is the most common and the best way to keep a palm in optimum condition. A palm pruned every year needs less work per visit, builds up fewer hazardous dead fronds and has a more accessible crown for treatment in the event of a pest.
Pruning every two years is also viable for healthy palms in areas at low risk of weevil, although it means more work at each visit. In coastal areas such as Calvià, Alcúdia or the Palma seafront, we recommend annual pruning and a preventive protocol against the red palm weevil.
If the palm shows signs of decline or you notice fronds falling in poor condition, get in touch before the scheduled pruning — it may be a sign of an active pest requiring endotherapy before any work is carried out.
